PARIS - Alize Cornet and Kristina Mladenovic beat Belinda Bencic and Timea Bacsinszky 7-5, 6-4 in doubles Sunday to give France a 3-2 win over Switzerland in their first-round tie of the Fed Cup World Group II. Mladenovics quick hands at the net made the difference while Bencics inexperience in doubles showed. "We took a lot of pleasure," Mladenovic told Sport Plus television. Mladenovic made amends by earning the decisive break at 3-3 with a forehand volley and the French pair won the match when Bacsinszkys backhand sailed long. On April 19-20, France and Switzerland will compete in playoffs. France will try to gain promotion to the World Group while Switzerland will aim to stay in World Group II. Earlier, Cornet beat Bacsinszky 6-2, 7-6 (4) to give France a 2-1 lead before teenager Bencic eased past Virginie Razzano 6-1, 6-1 to bring Switzerland level with France at 2-2. Cornet won six straight games to rally from a 2-0 deficit and take the first set. The 25th-ranked Frenchwoman broke back twice in the second set before Bacsinszky saved a match point at 5-4. In the tiebreaker, Cornet jumped to a 5-2 lead and clinched victory when Bacsinszkys backhand sailed wide. "Amelie kept her trust in me today and Im glad I did not prove her wrong," Cornet said in reference to France captain Amelie Mauresmo. Bencic showed great composure to break Razzano five times in a one-sided rubber. "I just played with no pressure," Bencic told Sport Plus television. "I just enjoyed the match. I was so relaxed." Bencic took a 4-0 lead and won the first set when Razzano netted a volley. The 16-year-old Swiss capitalized on two forehand errors from Razzano to also break serve at 2-1 and 4-1 in the final set. Bencic converted her third match point when the 30-year-old Razzano sent a backhand into the net. "I couldnt do anything against her today," Razzano told Sport Plus television. "I think shes an unbelievable player. She plays some dream tennis. Her future is promising." The 49ers have had some extra time to analyze their own disappointing loss and will try to get on track out of their bye week against the Rams in a matchup at Levis Stadium. San Francisco has been out of action since a 42-17 loss to the Broncos on Oct. 19, a Sunday night match in Denver that saw Peyton Manning set the all-time record for touchdown passes. Manning broke Brett Favres former mark of 508 by firing touchdown passes on three of his first four drives. The Niners were outgained by the Broncos 419-310 and Colin Kaepernick was sacked six times while completing 24-of-39 pass attempts for 263 yards. He threw a touchdown pass to Stevie Johnson, who ended with 79 yards receiving on five catches, but was also picked off once. In all phases the Broncos were on their game, especially Peyton, said Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh. Kaepernick also has been efficient in this series, posting a 117.6 passer rating over the three-game series winning streak. He has six touchdown passes and zero interceptions over the run. Even with the injuries and suspension to linebacker Aldon Smith, the Niners still boast the leagues second-ranked defense, which is giving up just 306.0 yards per game overall and just 84.9 YPG on the ground. San Francisco padded its sack total versus St. Louis and has 12 on the season, while the Rams have managed just an NFL-low six sacks on the year. However, St. Louis is getting hot up front. Defensive end Robert Quinn has three sacks in his last two games after getting none over his first five games, while rookie defensive tackle Aaron Donald has 11 tackles for a loss. The Rams rank 26th in points per game (19.4) and are 22nd in total offense at 336.4 yards per game, so the recent losses of tackle Jake Long and wide receiver Brian Quick were especially uninvited. Both will miss the rest of the season after getting hurt versus the Chiefs. Long torn the ACL in his knee for the second time in less than a year, while Quick has significant damage to his shoulder according to Fisher. Thats what he does. Hell have a week to work on the footwork and things like that this week. He went out there and knew what to do and came out of the stack on a screen and executed a block. You can see his athletic ability when he made the tackle on the interception. At the tackle position, hell be fine. Kendricks, meanwhile, has a TD catch in three straight games and could be the first Ram with a scoring grab over four consecutive games since Torry Holt in 2006. St. Louis made a trade prior to the deadline this week, getting third-year safety Mark Barron from Tampa Bay for two draft picks in 2015. Barron, the seventh overall pick of the 2012 draft, has recorded 49 tackles in seven games this year after totaling 88 each of his first two seasons. The Alabama product has recorded three career interceptions. OVERALL ANALYSIS Consistency has escaped the Niners this season, but not the Rams, who seem to struggle late in games week in and week out. All signs seem to favor San Francisco this weekend. The 49ers are home, fresh off a bye and taking on a Rams team missing several key contributors to injury. Hitting the road doesnt favor St. Louis at all.
