A special iron-embraced studio has been established for the painting of the portrait at the backcourt of the Tian’anmen rostrum. Painters have to go through strict inspections in their expertise, physical condition and political background before they are allowed to work for the painting.


Xing Chengqiu Cheap Air Max Deluxe , a painter in the crew of producing Chairman Mao’s portrait since 1978, recalled that his tutor and predecessor Wang Guodong often had to go up and down on a six-meter tall ladder while painting the portrait:


“You need to check constantly how it looks while you're painting. It is very demanding physically,” he said his teacher Wang Guodong usually painted for three times for the portrait: The first time he outlined the silhouette of the eyes and the nose; the second time he drafted the major shape, harmonizing different colors; and the third time he refined the details.


“Since the painting is huge, you have to break it into parts. But you don’t want to break the feeling of the wholeness, so you need to finish each part without any pause,” Xing Chengqiu added.
